Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees earned from Serbian medical universities are recognised by major medical councils and health organisations worldwide. Graduates will be able to register and practise as doctors in the UK and abroad.

Medical programmes for international students in Serbia meet the requirements for registration with the GMC. The courses cover the mandatory minimum of 5,500 hours over a period of at least 3 years. Serbian medical schools are also listed in the WHO’s World Directory of Medical School, which is another GMC requirement.

How are medical courses structured

English-taught undergraduate medical courses in Serbia are 6 years long, and completing them grants students an internationally-recognised Doctor of Medicine degree.

The programme is divided into pre-clinical and clinical modules, with the first three years consisting of theoretical modules and the following three years consisting of clinical rotations in Serbian hospitals.

Graduate entry medicine in Serbia

There are no graduate entry programmes in Serbia at this point.

The first 2 years are non-clinical years and comprise the following subjects: Anatomy, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry and Physiology.

The next 3 years are the clinical years where you spend more time in the hospitals obtaining practical and first-hand experience in life as a doctor.

In the final year, you will take the state exam in order to acquire your licence to practise. After successful completion of the exam, you will obtain the professional qualification of Doctor of Medicine (MD) and be given a Master’s degree.

The course is GMC recognised and meets the UK/EU criteria throughout its duration. The lecturers have long-term experience and you have access to modern facilities assisting your performance in the degree.

Student life in Serbia

The cost of living in Serbia is one of the lowest in all of Europe. Without rent, the average cost of living is £400 per month. The number is a little bit higher in Belgrade, the capital, at £450, and a little bit lower in Nis, at £350.

Rent prices are also the highest in the capital. For a 1-bedroom apartment, they range from £240 - £380. A 1-bedroom apartment in other cities such as Novi Sad and Nis will cost between £150 and £250 to rent.

In general, tourists and students can feel very safe in Serbia. Universities make sure that students are safe on their campuses and in the areas around them. On top of that, every university campus has security guards and CCTV cameras for added safety.
